Bon Odori 2017

Tuesday, July 18, 2017

Bon Odori was the highlight of my May 2017 experience. I've been a loyal attendee in this Japanese summer festival for the past four years. Although on the previous years it was usually held on the month of August, this year it was held on May to anticipate the summer season in the country. The spectacular event was held in Sugbo Grounds on the 27th and 28th of May. Since it was really hot during that time, my friends and I decided not to wear our yukatas (casual summer kimono).
The gate opened at 3PM and we were one of the few early birds in the venue. Perks of not dressing up too much, I guess? Haha!
The part of the venue in which everybody danced the infamous Bon dance later that evening.
My favorite part of this festival is that there were a lot of Japanese food everywhere!
Onigiri (rice balls)
Taiyaki (warm fish-shaped cake with red bean filling)
Dorayaki (a red-bean pancake)
Gyoza (pan-fried dumplings). They're definitely one of my favorites!
Apple candies in green and red colors.
Finally, a legit matcha! I'm in love with this. ♥
Because takoyaki is life. One of the best sellers, tbh.

A demo of Kendo.
There was even demo of mochi (a rice cake made of glutinous rice) making.

With the men who did the mochi making demo in their fundoshi (traditional Japanese undergarment for male adults)
Attending events like this is so much fun if you're with these people.
The event ended with a spectacular fireworks display. It was so spectacular that I just looked up in the sky and forgot to take some snaps. Haha! There was something new this year, btw. There was this flaming phoenix flying in the night sky. I honestly don't know how they did it but it was really amazing! It was great way to end an epic night, indeed! This year's Bon Odori event was really awesome. As always. ♥
